Lyons Irish Family Gifts & Heritage

Lyons is one of the most common surnames in the south of Ireland, and it grew from two Gaelic families. Ó Laighin takes its name from laighean, the Irish word for a spear or lance, while Ó Liatháin comes from Liathán, a diminutive of liath, meaning gray. Lyons became the usual English form of both, and this range carries the Lyons spelling.

The Ó Laighin were an old east Galway family whose lands lay in the barony of Kilconnell, held into the seventeenth century; a Kerry branch of the same name became Lyne. Notable Irish bearers include Robert Dyer Lyons, the Cork-born physician who went to the Crimea in 1855 as pathologist to the British army, and F. S. L.
