Ward Irish Family Gifts & Heritage

Ward carries an unusual distinction among Irish surnames: it names a profession rather than an ancestor. In its Irish form the name is Mac an Bhaird, "son of the bard" — bard being the trained, hereditary poet who held an honored place in the household of a Gaelic chief. (An unrelated English word, ward, separately means watchman or guard, but Irish Ward families take their name from the poet's craft, not the guard's post.)

The Mac an Bhaird ranked among the great learned families of Gaelic Ireland, serving as hereditary poets to two of the most powerful Gaelic dynasties: the O'Donnells of Tyrconnell in County Donegal, and the O'Kellys of County Galway. Poetry in Gaelic Ireland was a formal, highly trained profession passed down within specific families, and a household poet's verse could immortalize a chief's victories or, just as pointedly, satirize his failures, giving the bardic families real influence within Gaelic political life.

The bardic schools that trained the Mac an Bhaird poets declined through the seventeenth century as the Gaelic patronage system that sustained them collapsed under plantation and conquest, yet the family and its name endured across Donegal, Galway, and beyond. The Great Famine sent later generations of Wards from these western counties to Britain, the United States, Canada, and Australia, carrying a name that, unlike almost any other in Ireland, points directly back to a hereditary craft rather than a warrior ancestor.

This collection carries that bardic heritage into everyday keepsakes — crest blankets, garden flags, ornaments, drinkware, and apparel set against the Irish national tartan — for Ward families proud of a name built on poetry rather than the sword.
