Acheson Irish Surname: History, Origins & Heritage of an Ulster Family

Acheson family woven blanket showing a family crest on Irish tartan, celebrating Acheson Ulster-Scots heritage

The Acheson name sits at the meeting point of two heritages — Scottish in origin and Ulster in story. For the families who carry it today, especially across America, it holds the memory of the Plantation of Ulster and one of the great houses of County Armagh.

Where does the Acheson surname come from?

Acheson is a Scottish name that became firmly rooted in Ireland. It is believed to derive from a northern form of “Atkinson” — literally “son of Atkin,” a pet form of Adam — and the family was long established at Gosford in East Lothian before crossing the sea to Ulster. Record and tradition agree that Archibald Acheson received a grant of land in County Armagh in 1610, at the very start of the Plantation of Ulster, planting the name in Ireland where it has remained ever since.

The Achesons of Gosford

The Armagh branch rose to become one of the province’s leading families. Across the generations the Achesons were created baronets, then Viscounts Gosford, and finally Earls of Gosford, taking their title from Gosford near Markethill. Their seat, Gosford Castle, is a vast nineteenth-century house in the Norman-revival style and is often described as the largest castle in Ulster; its grounds survive today as Gosford Forest Park. For anyone tracing the Acheson name in Ireland, this corner of County Armagh is the heartland.
