Glen is one of the few Gaelic words that became plain English, and the surname comes not from the word but from particular pieces of ground that carried it as a name.
Scotland has hundreds of glens and very few places called simply Glen. Those few are what a Scottish Glen family is named for.
Which Glen Does the Surname Come From?
The Oxford-backed Dictionary of American Family Names is unambiguous for the Scottish line: a habitational name from Glen in Traquair, Peeblesshire, the place-name itself from Gaelic gleann, a valley. Traquair lies two miles south of Innerleithen on the Quair Water, ringed by hills over 1,500 feet and once enclosed by the Ettrick Forest.
A second, older Glen in Leicestershire is worth keeping separate. That one is Brittonic, cognate with Welsh glyn, standing as aet Glenn in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for 849 and in Domesday Book in 1086. It produced Gregory Glen in the Suffolk curia rolls of 1230 and Adam de Glen in the Leicestershire subsidy rolls of 1327.
The first clear Scottish bearer follows a year later: Colban del Glen, who received a legacy left him by the queen of Scotland in 1328, recorded in the Exchequer Rolls.
How Did gleann Become an English Word?
Slowly, and from the map upward. The Scottish National Dictionary defines a glen as a valley or hollow traversed by a stream, usually narrow and steep sided, and separates it from a strath, which is broader and lower. It finds the word in Scottish place-names from about 1160 and in Older Scots writing from about 1375.
By the time surnames hardened, glen was simply the Scots word for that shape of country, and it later crossed into standard English with the borrowings listed in our piece on English words taken from Gaelic. Who Were the Glens of Barr?
A Renfrewshire family with a tower to show for themselves. Barr Castle at Lochwinnoch was built by the Glens, its fabric dated to the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, and they held it until Alexander Glen died in April 1629, when it passed to the Hamiltons of Ferguslie.
That puts them among the lesser lairds of the west, alongside the Sempills of Castle Semple and the Lyles of Duchal, and explains why Glen clusters in the west as much as in the Borders.
Is The Glen in Peeblesshire a Glen Family Seat?
No, and this trips people up constantly. The Glen, in Traquair parish, was bought in 1852 by Charles Tennant of the St Rollox chemical works in Glasgow, who had David Bryce design a new house there, finished in 1855. His descendants took the title Glenconner.
The Tennants have no descent from the Glens. They bought a property whose name comes from the same ground-word the surname does, which is why searches keep returning Victorian house photographs.
How Common Is Glen, and Where?
Solidly Scottish. The 1901 census of Scotland counted 2,753 Glens, ranking the name 304th, and FamilySearch's Family Tree holds more Glens in Scotland, 8,161, than in the United States and England combined.
America reverses it. The 2020 US census recorded 2,382 people spelled Glen, ranked 12,441st, against 48,549 spelled Glenn at 686th, while Scotland in 1901 held roughly fifty Glens to every Glenn. That flip is the subject of our companion history of the Glenn spelling in Ulster and America.
Which Glens Left a Record Worth Reading?
James Glen is the largest of them. Born at Linlithgow in 1701, he reached South Carolina as royal governor in December 1743 and served until June 1756, longer than any other colonial governor there. His years were dominated by dealings with the Cherokee, including Fort Prince George and the Treaty of Saluda Old Town in 1755.
William Glen, born in Glasgow in 1789, is remembered for one song, "Wae's Me for Prince Charlie", and died in poverty in 1826. The actor Iain Glen carries the name today.
