McComb History & Origins: Mac Thom, Clan MacThomas & Glen Shee

McComb is the shortest thing Gaelic ever did to the name Thomas: Mac Thom, son of Tom, with nothing left over. Squeeze a biblical name through a Highland glen and that is what emerges.

The glen is Glen Shee, on the Perthshire and Angus march, and the man at the head of it was Tomaidh Mòr. Whether every McComb descends from him is a separate and more interesting question.

What Does McComb Mean?

Son of Tom. The Oxford-backed Dictionary of American Family Names gives McComb as an anglicized Gaelic Mac Thom, built on the clipped form of Thomas rather than the full one.

Set that beside its close relative. McCombie comes from Mac Thomaidh, son of Tommie, the diminutive. One is built on the stub, the other on the pet form, and in English records they slide into each other. The fuller version produced Thomson, and the Gaelic route through Tàmhas produced Clan MacTavish. Four surnames, one apostle.

How Close Is McComb to Clan MacThomas?

Close, but not identical, and the distinction matters.

Clan MacThomas descends from Tomaidh Mòr, Great Tommy, a grandson of William Mackintosh, seventh chief of Clan Mackintosh and eighth of the Clan Chattan confederation. In the fifteenth century he took his people out of Badenoch into Glen Shee, settling at the Thom on the east bank of the Shee Water and moving to Finegand around 1600 after the fourth chief was murdered. The clan came out for Charles I in 1644, feuded with the Farquharsons in 1673, and its chief is still designated of Finegand. The parent kindreds appear in our histories of Clan Mackintosh and the Clan Chattan confederation, and the neighbors it fell out with in our account of Clan Farquharson.

The names that scattered from that glen include McComie, McColm, McComas, Thom, Thomas and Thomson. The clan's full history is in our article on Clan MacThomas in Glen Shee, with the shortest variant of all treated in our piece on the Comb name.

Here is the caveat. Mac Thom is not a proprietary formula. Any Gaelic-speaking household with a father called Thomas could throw off a McComb independently, in any century. Association with Clan MacThomas is well founded; automatic descent from Tomaidh Mòr is not.

Is McComb a Mackinnon Name?

The Clan MacKinnon Society’s published list names Love, MacKinney, MacKinning, MacKinven, MacMorran, Morren, and Sherry. It does not include McComb. This guide follows the McComb name through its Mac Thom connection, keeping that history distinct from MacKinnon’s island origins.

How Did McComb Become an Ulster Name?

By the usual crossing, and decisively. The 1901 census of Scotland returned 194 bearers at 2,173rd; Ireland returned 767 that year at 970th, nearly four Irish McCombs for every Scottish one. Related Ulster-Scots surnames of Gaelic derivation appear in our history of the McConnells of Ulster.

The Scottish record trail is southern rather than Highland, which fits a family already off the glen. Gilchrist Makcome appears in the Register of the Privy Seal in 1526. Roger M'Com is at Kirkcudbright in 1679 and Robert McKome at Carsfern in 1684, both in Galloway, the natural jumping-off point for Ulster. Anne McCamish was christened at Clones in County Monaghan in 1693: the same name after a generation of Irish ears.

Who Built New York City Hall?

A McComb. John McComb Jr. was born in New York City on 17 October 1763 to another architect of the same name, and was of Scottish ancestry. From 1790 to 1825 he was the city's leading architect, and his surviving work is a short list of landmarks: the Montauk Point Lighthouse in 1796, Hamilton Grange in 1802, New York City Hall in 1803 and Castle Clinton in 1808.

He died in the city on 25 May 1853. The American numbers are respectable rather than large: 5,291 McCombs in the 2020 census, at 6,198th.

Which Spellings Should You Search Together?

  1. Search McComb, McCombe, MacComb, M'Comb, McCome and Combe as one set. The final e is decoration.
  2. Add McComie, McComish, McComas and McCamish for Ulster and colonial American records. They are the same name after phonetic wear.
  3. Treat McCombie and McCombs with care. McCombie has its own derivation from Mac Thomaidh, and McCombs is often a separate American line.
  4. Use geography as the filter. Glen Shee, Angus and Perthshire point at the clan; Galloway, Antrim and Down at the Ulster route.

A surname this compressed has earned the right to be shown at full size. Two McComb pieces carry the family crest on a tartan background: a garden flag for the yard and a framed silver keepsake for the tree. Clan MacThomas holds a recognized tartan of its own, so a McComb who can document the Glen Shee connection has a real claim to it; a McComb who cannot should read this weave as a heritage design. Our guide to tartan and who may wear it explains the difference.

Frequently Asked Questions About the McComb Name

Is McComb a sept of Clan MacThomas?

It is counted among the clan's associated names, on good grounds. It does not follow that every McComb descends from Tomaidh Mòr, since Mac Thom could form wherever a man named Thomas had sons.

Are McComb and McCombie the same?

They are siblings rather than twins. McComb is Mac Thom, from the clipped Tom; McCombie is Mac Thomaidh, from the pet form Tommie. Records mix them freely.

Is McComb Scottish or Irish?
