The clearest early trace of this surname in Scotland is a short run of parish marriage entries dated between roughly 1550 and 1675, and in the oldest of them the name is not spelled Udward at all.
It is written Uddart. A generation on, Udwart. Only late in the run does Udward surface, and the bearers can be counted on two hands.

Is Udward Simply a Spelling of Edward?
That is the obvious guess, and the standard reference does not support it.
The Oxford dictionary of family names in Britain and Ireland derives Edward from Old English Eadweard, prosperity plus guard. Its variant list is generous, reaching forms as far from the headword as Kedward, Ewart, Yorath and Crundwell. Neither Udward nor Udwart appears on it.
No dictionary consulted here carries an Udward headword either, and that silence hangs over other names too scarce to build an etymology on. Was There an Udward Family Among the Edinburgh Burgesses?
This is where the name's reputation rests. The Udwart and Uddart entries are often tied to Edinburgh merchant families, and the company those bearers kept fits a burgh setting: Charteris, Forbes, Thomson, Young and Inglis, a Midlothian and Edinburgh name, all recur in Lowland burgh records.
Fitting is not proving. No burgess roll, guild entry, testament or sasine has been examined here, and until one is, the merchant story stays an inference. Burgh-trade names such as Cant usually leave a trail thick enough to settle it. That trail has not been followed for Udward.

One caution comes with those numbers. Among the Udward records is a nineteenth-century Romanian marriage, Franciscus Udward to Elisabetha Koncz. The spelling is not Scotland's exclusive property, and a bare index hit is not a Scottish ancestor.

- Search Udward, Udwart, Uddart, Uddert and Udart together from the first query. At this scale one wrong guess about spelling loses the family.
- Work the Edinburgh and Leith parishes first. Every traced Scottish entry falls between about 1560 and 1675.
- Go to Edinburgh's burgess and guild brethren records. If the merchant tradition is right, that is where it will be proved.
- Start late and work back. Certificates after 1855 name parents, which is why the move to civil registration is the usual entry point for a rare name.
