Athell surname history
Athell is a variant spelling of Atholl, a historic district of highland Perthshire whose Gaelic name is thought to mean either "New Ireland" or "way to the north," and which was the seat of Scotland's oldest earldom. People recorded under spellings such as Athell, Athol, Athole and Atholl generally took the name either as tenants and dependents of the district itself or, in the case of the noble family, as an inherited title surname carried by the Stewarts and later the Murrays, Dukes of Atholl.
