Atheson is generally treated as a variant within the Aitchison/Acheson/Atcheson surname family, traditionally explained as a patronymic ultimately connected with the personal name Adam. The strongest historical associations are with the Scottish Borders and Lothians. Claims that every bearer belongs to a formal sept of Clan Gordon should be treated cautiously.
