Barry is one of the great names of County Cork, brought to Ireland by the Cambro-Norman de Barri family and rooted in the baronies of Barrymore and Barryroe. Barry in Ireland is chiefly the name of the de Barri family, Cambro-Norman knights who took their name from Barry Island on the Glamorgan coast of Wales. In Irish the name is de Barra, and a member of the family is Barrach; Barry and de Barry are the same line. In West Cork and Limerick a few Barry families descend instead from the small Gaelic families Ó Báire and Ó Beargha.
Robert de Barri landed at Bannow in County Wexford in 1169, and in 1179 Philip de Barri received the Cork lands that became the baronies of Barrymore, Orrery and Kinelea. The family divided into branches headed by An Barrach Mór, the Great Barry, and Barrach Ruadh, the Red Barry, names still carried by Barrymore and Barryroe. The senior line became Viscounts Buttevant in 1541 and Earls of Barrymore from 1627 until 1823. Philip's brother was Gerald of Wales, the chronicler of the Norman arrival in Ireland, and in the twentieth century Tom Barry of Rosscarbery led the West Cork flying column at Kilmichael and Crossbarry.
