Bellenden is a Scottish surname taken from a place-name, Bellenden (now usually written Bellendean) in Roxburghshire in the Scottish Borders, and it was used interchangeably for centuries with the related surname Ballantyne. Bearers of the name included the 16th-century royal translator John Bellenden, the bishop Adam Bellenden, and the holders of the short-lived Scottish peerage title Lord Bellenden. It is not associated with a recognized Highland or Border clan, so its history is best understood as a landed and professional family history rather than a clan history.
