About Berry Scottish Family Gifts & Heritage

Berry surname history

Berry is primarily an English topographic surname, from Old English byrig ("at the fortified manor/borough"), first recorded as "Gilbert de la Beri" in Cornwall's 1202 Pipe Rolls; a smaller number of lines trace to an Irish Gaelic surname. It is not a Scottish clan name and carries no registered tartan or chief. Even so, a documented Berry family settled at Tayfield in Fife from the 1780s onward, and Cupar-born Alexander Berry (1781–1873) became one of colonial New South Wales' wealthiest landholders — a genuine Scottish chapter within an otherwise English surname history.
