Blackwood is a Scottish locational surname associated with the lands and village of Blackwood in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire. William de Blackwood is recorded in Stirlingshire in 1327. The name also has a real historical association with the House of Douglas: the Clan Douglas Society of North America includes Blackwood among its accepted sept names, citing ties involving the Weirs of Blackwood and a surviving 1547 bond of manrent to the Earl of Angus. That is a society classification based on documented historical association, not an official clan status conferred by a Scottish heraldic authority.
