About Bothwell Scottish Family Gifts & Heritage

Bothwell surname history

Bothwell Castle was begun in the thirteenth century by Walter de Moravia — the ancestor of Clan Murray — who held the barony of Bothwell from the Scottish crown. The de Moravia (or de Moray) family were one of the great Norman-descended dynasties of medieval Scotland, whose name survives in the clan name Murray. Walter de Moravia began an ambitious building programme at Bothwell that, had it been completed as planned, would have produced one of the largest and most sophisticated castles in Britain.
