Boyle is one of the most recognizable surnames of Ireland's northwest, and its roots run deep into County Donegal. In its original Gaelic form, Ó Baoighill, the name belonged to one of the three ruling kindreds of the medieval lordship of Tyrconnell, standing alongside the O'Donnells and O'Dohertys as one of the families with a hereditary voice in the inauguration of the O'Donnell chief. The Ó Baoighill were a sept of the Cíenel Conaill, and their territory stretched along the rugged Atlantic coast of Donegal, in the Rosses and the barony that still bears their name today: Boylagh. Theirs was a maritime world of fishing and seaborne trade, and the family's standing rested as much on the sea as on the land.
The fall of Gaelic Ulster in the early seventeenth century, following the Flight of the Earls and the Plantation that followed, broke apart the O'Boyle lordship along with the O'Donnells' wider world — yet the family never left Donegal. Boyle remains one of the county's most common surnames, and the Great Famine sent later generations across the Irish Sea to Scotland and across the Atlantic to America and Australia, with the Donegal–Glasgow emigrant route making Boyle one of the most familiar Irish names in Scotland to this day.
