Burke & Bourke Irish Family Heritage Gifts

Burke and Bourke come from the Anglo-Norman de Burgh family, known in Irish as de Búrca. William de Burgh arrived in the 1170s, and his descendants won vast lordships in Connacht, took up the Irish language and customs, and split into two powerful branches: Mac William Uachtar, lords of Clanricarde in Galway, and Mac William Íochtar in Mayo. Castles such as Ballymote in Sligo, raised by the Red Earl Richard de Burgh around 1300, and Rockfleet on Clew Bay still mark that western landscape.

The name went on to produce the Dublin-born statesman and philosopher Edmund Burke, while the Bourke spelling belongs to Mary Robinson, born Mary Bourke in Ballina, County Mayo, and later President of Ireland.
