Byrne gifts for home and garden, from woven blankets and tartan coasters to garden flags and mugs. The name comes from Ó Broin, the Wicklow Mountains family of Fiach MacHugh O’Byrne, with a second Ó Birn line in Connacht.
Byrne and O’Byrne come from the Irish Ó Broin, “descendant of Bran,” a name Patrick Woulfe glosses as “raven.” The family traces to Bran, son of Maolmórdha, king of Leinster, who died at Cologne in 1052. Their first territory lay in Uí Faoláin in north Kildare, and after the Anglo-Norman invasion they moved into the Wicklow Mountains, where Críoch Bhranach and the Ranelagh country became the center of O’Byrne power for three centuries.
The most celebrated O’Byrne is Fiach MacHugh, who routed Lord Deputy Grey at Glenmalure in August 1580 and resisted Tudor rule until his death in 1597. Connacht has its own Byrnes too: the name Ó Birn, also written Beirne, belonged to the chiefs of Tír Briúin in Roscommon and to a Mayo family near Ballinrobe.
