About Clan Campbell

Clan Campbell is a recognised Scottish clan with deep roots in Argyll. The Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs lists the Duke of Argyll as Chief of Campbell, and Inveraray Castle describes itself as the home of the Dukes of Argyll and the seat of Clan Campbell.

The Inveraray family timeline identifies Gilleasbaig of Menstrie around 1260 as the earliest known Campbell and places Cailean Mór at Loch Awe by 1280. George F. Black’s standard surname reference derives Campbell from Gaelic cam beul, usually rendered “wry” or “crooked mouth.” The clan motto Ne Obliviscaris is usually translated “Forget Not.”
