Connolly & Conolly Irish Family Gifts

Connolly and Conolly are English forms of Ó Conghalaigh, “descendant of Conghalach,” a personal name meaning valorous. The name grew up in four separate homelands: a southern Uí Néill family in East Meath, who moved north after the Anglo-Norman invasion and settled with the MacMahons in County Monaghan; a Dalcassian family in Thomond; a branch of the Uí Maine in Galway; and a family in Roscommon.

The Monaghan line became the leading one, with chiefs of the name by the fifteenth century and a hand in the rising of 1641. William Conolly (1662–1729), born in Ballyshannon, rose to be Speaker of the Irish House of Commons and built Castletown House in County Kildare. James Connolly (1868–1916), son of Monaghan parents, led the Citizen Army in the Easter Rising and remains one of Ireland’s most influential political writers.
