Devereux traces to the Anglo-Norman de Evereux family, whose name came from Évreux in Normandy. The primary history places the family in Ireland after the twelfth-century invasion and associates it especially with the barony of Bargy in County Wexford, where it became part of the long-established Old English Catholic community. Devereaux appears as a related historical spelling.
