About Doherty & O’Doherty Irish Family Heritage Gifts

Doherty and O’Doherty are English forms of Ó Dochartaigh, “descendant of Dochartach.” A branch of Cenél Conaill and of the same stock as the O’Donnells, the family first ruled Cenél Énna and Ardmire in the barony of Raphoe, then became lords of Inishowen around the start of the fifteenth century and one of the most powerful families of Tír Conaill.

Their last lord, Sir Cahir O’Doherty, seized Culmore Fort and stormed Derry in April 1608 before he was killed near Kilmacrennan that July, and the O’Doherty lands passed to Sir Arthur Chichester. The name endured all the same: Woulfe counted the O’Dohertys among the most numerous of Irish families, and Inishowen remains its heartland.
