Doyle Irish Family Gifts & Heritage

Doyle comes from the Irish Ó Dubhghaill, “descendant of Dubhghall,” the “dark foreigner” of the Viking age. Patrick Woulfe traced the name to Ireland’s Norse settlers and found it most frequent along the Leinster and Munster coasts, near the old Danish towns. O’Doyle, Dowell and Doole grew from the same root.

The Doyle heartland runs down the east coast through Dublin, Wicklow, Wexford and Carlow. When Robert Matheson counted Irish births in 1890, 391 of 514 Doyle entries came from Leinster, and he ranked Doyle as the twelfth most common surname in Ireland, carried by some 23,000 people. The name also put down strong roots in Kerry and Cork. Among its best-known bearers, James Warren Doyle, the Wexford-born bishop of Kildare and Leighlin who wrote as “J.K.L.,” was a powerful voice for Catholic Emancipation in the 1820s, and Dublin novelist Roddy Doyle won the Booker Prize in 1993 with Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha.
