Dunn and Dunne are one Irish name, the anglicized forms of the Gaelic Ó Duinn, "descendant of Donn," from donn, brown. Dunn is the usual spelling in Ulster and Dunne the form almost everywhere else in Ireland, and this collection carries both.
The Ó Duinn were lords of Uí Riagáin, or Iregan, the territory now mapped as the barony of Tinnahinch in the north of County Laois. Woulfe counts them as a branch of the Uí Failghe and one of the chief families of Leinster. Their castle at Tinnahinch, near Clonaslee, was built by Tadhg Ó Duinn, lord in 1475, and stood until Cromwellian forces destroyed it in 1653. The poet and historian Gilla na Náem Ua Duinn died in 1160 as lector of Inis Clothrann, and in 1944 Ben Dunne opened the first Dunnes Stores in Cork.
