Farrell and O'Farrell come from the Gaelic Ó Fearghail, lords of Annaly, whose fortress of Longphort Uí Fhearghail gave Longford its name. Farrell and O'Farrell are the anglicized forms of the Gaelic Ó Fearghail, "descendant of Fearghal," a personal name built on the old Irish word for valor. Older records also write it O'Ferrall and Ferrall, and this collection gathers the Farrell and O'Farrell spellings together.
The Ó Fearghail were the ruling family of Annaly (Anghaile), the territory that became County Longford, and Longford town takes its name from their seat, Longphort Uí Fhearghail, the O'Farrell fortress. They held Annaly as an independent lordship until 1565, led in later centuries by the O'Farrell Boy and O'Farrell Bane branches. Longford is still Farrell country: J. P. Farrell (1865–1921) founded the Longford Leader, wrote a history of the county and sat as MP for North Longford, while the Dublin midwife Elizabeth O'Farrell carried the rebels' surrender message in Easter Week 1916.
