Leeson is an English patronymic meaning “son of Leece,” with Leece or Lettice being a medieval female personal name derived ultimately from the Latin laetitia, meaning “gladness” or “joy.” In Ireland the Leeson family became prominent in Dublin and Leinster, including the Earls of Milltown, and the surname remains visible in Dublin place-names.
