On the western shore of Loch Lomond, where the mountains rise sharply from the water and the islands scatter across the loch's northern reaches, Clan MacFarlane held their ground for centuries. This was not the gentler Lowland shore to the east but the steep, forested Highland side — a landscape that shaped its inhabitants in particular ways and gave the MacFarlanes a character that their motto captures precisely: This I’ll Defend.
Descended from the ancient Earls of Lennox, the MacFarlanes held Arrochar at the head of Loch Long and rallied to the war cry “Loch Sloy.” Their night raids were so well known that the full moon in the district was called “MacFarlane’s Lantern.”
