Clan MacThomas takes its name from the Gaelic Mac Thomaidh, son of Thomas, and traces its founding to Tomaidh Mor — Great Thomas — a fifteenth-century grandson of Mackintosh of Mackintosh who broke away from the Clan Chattan confederation to establish an independent identity in Glen Shee, Perthshire.
