About McCarthy Irish Family Gifts & Heritage
McCarthy, in Irish Mac Cárthaigh, means “son of Cárthach,” an old personal name tied to the sense “loving.” The family takes its name from Cárthach, lord of the Eoghanacht, who died in 1045. Before the Anglo-Norman invasion the MacCarthys reigned as kings of Desmond, and from Cork and Kerry they held great estates down to the revolution of 1688.
Three great branches carried the name: MacCarthy Mór, seated chiefly in Kerry; MacCarthy Reagh, lords of Carbery in west Cork; and MacCarthy of Muskerry in mid-Cork, whose strongholds included Blarney Castle. In 1565 Donal MacCarthy Mór was created Earl of Clancar, and later generations of the family became Earls of Clancarthy and Viscounts Muskerry.
Our McCarthy range brings that Munster story home.
