McGrath Irish Family Gifts & Heritage

McGrath, also written Magrath and MacGrath, comes from Irish Mag Raith or Mac Craith, built on the old personal name Mac Raith, “son of grace” or prosperity. Two great families carried it. In the north, the McGraths were coarbs of St Daveog at Lough Derg and held Termon Magrath, where the ruins of their castle still stand just west of Pettigo on the Donegal–Fermanagh border. In Thomond, a second family served the O’Briens as hereditary poets and chroniclers, and another McGrath family became influential in County Waterford.

From the Termon family came Miler Magrath, the sixteenth-century churchman who held the archbishopric of Cashel for half a century. Today the name is common all over Ireland.
