A Name Rooted in Aberdeenshire
Meldrum is a territorial Scottish surname from the lands around Oldmeldrum in Formartine, Aberdeenshire. A medieval kin group took its identity from those lands, and surviving records connect Meldrum families with Meldrum House, Fyvie and other north-eastern estates.
Today Meldrum is described as an armigerous clan or family: historical chiefs and armigers are known, but there is no current chief carrying the original chiefly line. Armorial designs therefore belong to particular recorded people and branches. Family research should start with a known ancestor and work through parish, civil and estate records before attaching a modern household to specific historical arms.
The assortment ranges from mugs, apparel and phone cases to blankets, flags, ornaments, coasters, a serving board and wall display pieces. Tartan-themed designs are commemorative artwork: the family’s own history resource notes that there is no recognised Meldrum tartan.
