Moran is the anglicized form of two Gaelic names from Connacht. Ó Móráin means "descendant of Mórán," a pet form of mór, "great," while Ó Mughróin comes from the old personal name Mughrón. O'Moran keeps the Irish Ó, and this collection carries both Moran and O'Moran.
The Ó Móráin were a branch of the Uí Fiachrach who ruled lands on both sides of the River Moy, their chief seated at Ardnaree beside Ballina, and a second Ó Móráin family belonged to the Muintir Eolais of Leitrim. The Ó Mughróin were a leading family of Clann Chathail in Roscommon and chiefs of Cruffon in east Galway. Famous Irish Morans include Patrick Francis Moran of Leighlinbridge, County Carlow, Archbishop of Sydney and Australia's first cardinal, and D. P. Moran, the Waterford-born journalist who founded The Leader in 1900.
The range sets the Moran family crest on the Irish National Tartan across a woven cotton blanket, a printed throw, an accent mug, a framed Christmas ornament and a wall pennant, with a House of O'Moran garden flag for the porch and an Irish harp T-shirt for family gatherings.
The Mayo and Galway roots of the name are traced in our Moran Irish surname history.
