Rooted in the seafaring and lordly name Muireadhach, the Murrays of Connacht and Breifne live on in our Irish National Tartan woven blanket, garden flag and mug, and a Celtic harp T-shirt.
Murray has deep Irish roots in two Gaelic names, Ó Muireadhaigh and Mac Muireadhaigh, both built on the personal name Muireadhach, “seaman” or “lord.” The Ó Muireadhaigh families of Mayo, Roscommon, Westmeath and Cork were dynastic lines that once ruled wide districts, the best known among the Uí Maine of south Roscommon and east Galway. Mac Muireadhaigh is an old surname of Breifne, often anglicized MacMorrow.
The name produced many distinguished churchmen, none more influential than Daniel Murray, born near Arklow, County Wicklow, in 1768 and archbishop of Dublin from 1823 to 1852. He helped Mary Aikenhead found the Religious Sisters of Charity and received the first vows of Catherine McAuley’s Sisters of Mercy. With Aikenhead he also opened St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin in 1834.
The Murray range keeps things simple and striking: an heirloom woven blanket, a garden flag and a black accent mug, each on the Irish National Tartan, plus a Celtic harp T-shirt for everyday wear or a family gathering.
