Alcock is built from a nickname and an ending. Al is short for Alan or Alexander; -cock was a medieval English suffix meaning roughly 'young' or 'lad', attached freely to given names in the way a village attaches nicknames to everyone in it. The name reached Ireland with English settlement and stayed.
