The Blake Name in Ireland

The Tribes were the merchant families who ran Galway city for centuries, and the Blakes were among the greatest of them. The line began as Caddells: Richard Caddell, called le Blake — the dark — in the early 1300s, and the nickname outlived the surname entirely. From Menlo Castle on the Corrib and a dozen other houses, Blakes traded, governed, and married through Galway's whole story, and the name remains one of the west of Ireland's proudest.
