The principal sept is Ó Braonáin, lords of Idough in the north of Kilkenny, who held their upland country stubbornly against every comer and gave the name its heartland in the southeast. Two other lines feed the same English spelling: Mac Branáin, chiefs in Roscommon, and Ó Branáin of Fermanagh. That is why Brennans turn up strongly in Kilkenny, Roscommon, and Ulster alike — three distinct Gaelic families, one name in English.
