The root is burgeis — a freeman of a medieval borough, a townsman with standing — and Burges is Burgess before the second s settled on. It reached Ireland with English settlement and stayed modest in number, with a notable Ulster seat at Parkanaur in Tyrone. The single-s spelling has become scarce, which serves its families well: a Burges in the Irish records is seldom anyone else's ancestor.
