The name is an English place-name built from burh and tūn — the settlement by the fort — and it repeats all over England, which is why Burtons reached Ireland from several directions. Their clearest mark on the Irish map is in the northwest, where the Burton Conyngham family gave their name to Burtonport in west Donegal, the fishing harbour looking out to Arranmore. Burton Hall in Carlow carried the name in the southeast.
