The Irish is Ó Conalláin, from a diminutive of the old personal name Conall, and its home ground is Connacht — Roscommon and Sligo above all — where it also appears as O'Connellan and Conlan. The nineteenth century gave the name its scholar: Owen Connellan of Sligo, Irish historiographer to George IV and William IV, translated the Annals of the Four Masters into English in 1846 and held the chair of Irish at Queen's College Cork.
