The Crean Name in Ireland

The Irish form is Ó Croidheáin, a Connacht name that also anglicized as Crehan and, in Roscommon, as Cryan. In sixteenth-century Sligo town the O'Creans were leading merchants, prosperous enough to leave a carved family tomb in Sligo Abbey that still stands. The name's most famous bearer took it to the other end of the earth: Tom Crean of Annascaul, County Kerry, served on three Antarctic expeditions, including Shackleton's Endurance, and came home to open a pub called the South Pole Inn.
