The Crosbie Name in Ireland

The northern Crosbies carry a plain place-name from the crosby towns of the Scottish and English border country. The Kerry Crosbies are another story: they began as Mac an Chrosáin, a Gaelic family of hereditary reciters, and in the Elizabethan era Patrick Mac an Chrosáin refashioned himself as Crosbie — a new name for a new order. His kin prospered under it, at Ardfert and beyond, and the name has been part of Kerry's landed and civic story ever since.
