The Edgeworth family settled in County Longford in the sixteenth century and became deeply embedded in the life of the Irish midlands. Maria Edgeworth, writing from Edgeworthstown in the early nineteenth century, produced some of the most influential fiction in the English language — her novel Castle Rackrent is widely regarded as the first regional novel in English and a foundational text of Irish literature. Richard Lovell Edgeworth, her father, was a prominent figure of the Enlightenment. The family name is inseparable from the intellectual and literary history of Ireland.
