The Story Behind the Design

The Fitz-John name — son of John in the Norman French tradition — is one of the patronymic surnames that entered Irish life with the Anglo-Norman families after 1169, and John, being the most common Christian name in the medieval world, made Fitz-John a name that appeared across many of the Norman-settled counties of Ireland. The Fitz-John families that emerge in Irish records were part of the settled Anglo-Norman community — a community that, over generations, became thoroughly Irish in language, custom, and identity. This woven blanket features the Fitz-John family crest against the rich tones of the Irish National Tartan.

History & Heritage

John was the name of kings, bishops, and farmers alike in the Norman world, and its frequency meant that Fitz-John surnames spread across many families and counties in medieval Ireland. In Leinster especially — the heartland of the Norman settlement — the Fitz-John name was part of the fabric of Anglo-Norman Irish life. Over the centuries, as many of these Norman families became Gaelicised, the Fitz- prefix dropped from some branches while remaining in others, creating the complex landscape of Irish surnames we recognise today.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven, not printed. The Fitz-John family crest and the Irish National Tartan are formed within the cotton textile during the weaving process itself — not applied to the surface but integrated into the cloth from the beginning. The result is genuine woven depth: rich, consistent pattern visible on both sides, a soft but heavyweight feel from the premium cotton yarn, and traditional fringed edges that reflect the quality of the whole piece.
