The Story Behind the Design

The FitzPatrick name holds a remarkable place in Irish history — it is one of the very few Gaelic Irish surnames to carry the Norman Fitz- prefix. Mac Giolla Phádraig in Irish — son of the devotee of Saint Patrick — was the ancient Gaelic name of the lords of Ossory in County Kilkenny, one of the great kingdoms of Leinster. In the sixteenth century, under pressure to conform to the anglicising policies of the Tudor administration, the Mac Giolla Phádraig chiefs adopted the form FitzPatrick — a fusion of their Gaelic identity with the Norman naming convention. It is a name that carries both Gaelic sovereignty and a complicated history of survival. This Irish woven blanket, featuring the FitzPatrick family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honours that extraordinary heritage.

History & Heritage

The Mac Giolla Phádraig — the FitzPatricks — were kings of Ossory, a territory centred on County Kilkenny that had been a distinct Irish kingdom long before the Norman arrival. They ruled from Durów, County Offaly — site of one of Ireland's great early medieval monasteries, founded by Saint Columba — and maintained their sovereignty in Ossory through the Norman period and beyond. When Barnaby Mac Giolla Phádraig became the first Baron of Upper Ossory under Henry VIII, he took the surname FitzPatrick — making him the only Gaelic Irish lord to use the Fitz- form. The family's long history in the Kilkenny-Laois-Offaly region makes the FitzPatrick name one of the most historically layered in all of Ireland.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the FitzPatrick family crest and the Irish National Tartan integrated into the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. The pattern is part of the cloth itself: consistent depth on both sides, rich woven texture, a substantial and soft feel from the premium cotton. Traditional fringed edges finish the piece as a genuine woven heirloom, made to carry a name of this significance into the everyday life of a family home.
