The Story Behind the Design
The Foster name in Ireland is carried by families whose roots reach back to the plantation and settlement periods of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when English and Scottish families established themselves across Ulster and Leinster alongside the existing Gaelic and Norman-Irish communities. Foster — from the Old French forester, keeper of the forest — became a prominent name in the Irish record, associated with landholding families across Ulster in particular. The most distinguished Irish bearer of this name was John Foster, the last Speaker of the Irish House of Commons before the Act of Union in 1800 — a figure of considerable political importance in the final years of Grattan’s Parliament. This Irish woven blanket features the Foster family crest against the Irish National Tartan.
History & Heritage
The Foster family of Louth — of which John Foster, Baron Oriel, was the most prominent member — were among the significant Anglo-Irish gentry families of the north Leinster and Ulster borderlands. The family held estates at Collon in County Louth and were part of the established Protestant Ascendancy gentry of the eighteenth century. John Foster’s long speakership of the Irish Parliament and his fierce opposition to the Act of Union made him one of the most consequential political figures of his era. More broadly, the Foster name across Ulster and Leinster represents the deep roots of the English settler community that became, over generations, as Irish as any family on the island.
Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Foster family crest and the Irish National Tartan integrated into the textile during weaving, not applied to the surface. The design is part of the cloth itself: consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel from the premium cotton, and traditional fringed edges completing the piece correctly.
