The Story Behind the Design

The Fox name in Ireland carries a Gaelic origin of genuine distinction: O'Sionnaigh in Irish — from sionnach, meaning fox — the Gaelic lords of Teffia in County Westmeath and County Longford. The O'Sionnaighs were kings of Teffia, an ancient Gaelic territory in the Irish midlands that formed part of the broader kingdom of Meath, and their name was anglicised as Fox in the translation of the Irish animal name. It is a relatively rare case in Irish naming history where the Gaelic and English forms carry the same meaning rather than just the same sound, making the Fox name one of the most transparent and elegant of all Irish surname translations. This Irish woven blanket, featuring the Fox family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honours the O'Sionnagh heritage of the Irish midlands.

History & Heritage

The O'Sionnaigh — the Foxes — held their territory of Teffia across what is now south Westmeath and north Longford, a midland landscape of drumlins, lakes, and river corridors that had been inhabited and farmed since the earliest periods of Irish history. As lords of Teffia they were part of the provincial world of Meath and the midlands, neighbours and sometimes rivals to the great dynasties of Leinster and Connacht. The name Fox became widespread across the Irish midlands and spread through the diaspora in the centuries of emigration, always carrying with it the memory of the O'Sionnagh Gaelic lordship from which it came.

Craftsmanship

This is a woven blanket — the Fox family crest and the Irish National Tartan created within the cotton textile during the weaving process, not applied to the surface. The design is part of the cloth structure itself, giving consistent woven depth and pattern detail on both sides, a soft and substantial feel from the premium cotton yarn, and traditional fringed edges that complete the piece as a genuinely woven heritage item.
