The Story Behind the Design

The O'Gara name is a distinguished Gaelic Irish surname from County Roscommon and the Connacht region, the family historically lords of Coolavin in the barony of Coolavin in County Sligo — a territory they held with authority through the medieval period. Ó Gadhra in Irish, from the personal name Gadhar meaning hound or mastiff, the O'Gara family were part of the great Connacht Gaelic world, their power centred in the Sligo and Roscommon borderlands. This Irish woven blanket features the O'Gara family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring a proud Connacht heritage.

History & Heritage

The O'Garas of Coolavin were lords of a territory in County Sligo from which they presided over the Gaelic community of the region through the medieval centuries. The family produced Fearfeasa Ó Gadhra — Farfessa O'Gara — one of the principal patrons of the Annals of the Four Masters, the great seventeenth-century chronicle of Irish history compiled by the Franciscan friars at Donegal under the direction of Brother Michéal Ó Cléirigh. That patronage alone places the O'Gara name at one of the most significant moments in Irish cultural history — the effort to preserve the Gaelic record in the face of its impending destruction. The family's territory in Coolavin is remembered still in that Sligo barony name.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the O'Gara family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile during weaving, part of the cloth structure rather than a surface print. Rich woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece as a genuinely woven heritage item.
