The Story Behind the Design

The Gibbons name in Ireland — Mac Giobuin or a variant of the FitzGibbon tradition — is a surname with both Gaelic Irish and Anglo-Norman connections, found principally in County Mayo and the Connacht region as well as in the Munster counties where the FitzGibbon influence was strongest. The Gibbons families of Mayo were part of the Burke-influenced Gaelic-Norman world of Connacht, where the great de Burgh — Burke — family had so thoroughly adopted Gaelic customs that their cadet families became indistinguishable from the native Irish. This Irish woven blanket features the Gibbons family crest against the Irish National Tartan.

History & Heritage

The Gibbons of Mayo were part of the extended Mac William Burke network of Connacht, families whose Norman origin had been so thoroughly Gaelicised over the medieval centuries that they functioned as Gaelic Irish families in every meaningful way. Their name — from Gibbon, a diminutive of Gilbert — connects them to the Norman-origin network of Gibbon-descended families across Munster and Connacht. The Mayo Gibbons families are part of the distinctive west of Ireland heritage that combines Norman origin with Gaelic identity in the particular way that only Connacht could produce.

Construction

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Gibbons family crest and the Irish National Tartan created within the textile structure during weaving, not printed onto the surface. The design is part of the cloth itself from the beginning, with consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges completing the piece correctly.
