The Story Behind the Design

The O’Gormley name — O’Gormghaile in Irish, from gorm meaning blue or illustrious and gal meaning valour or zeal — is a Gaelic Irish surname rooted in County Tyrone and the north-west Ulster region, the family among the notable Gaelic families of the province. The O’Gormleys were lords of Cenél Moen in Tyrone, a branch of the great Uí Néill kindred that dominated Ulster throughout the early medieval period, and their name is deeply embedded in the history of the north. This Irish woven blanket features the O’Gormley family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring a proud Tyrone and Ulster heritage.

History & Heritage

The O’Gormleys of Tyrone were part of the sprawling Uí Néill dynasty, those descendants of the legendary high king Niall of the Nine Hostages who came to dominate the north of Ireland across the early medieval centuries. Their territory of Cenél Moen lay in the Tyrone heartland, that same landscape that produced the O’Neill lords whose power shaped Ulster politics for a millennium. The O’Gormley name survived the Nine Years’ War, the Flight of the Earls in 1607, and the subsequent plantation of Ulster, the family scattering across Ireland and the diaspora while maintaining the name that had been part of the Ulster Gaelic world for so many generations.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the O’Gormley family crest and the Irish National Tartan integrated into the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. The design is part of the cloth itself: consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel from the premium cotton, and traditional fringed edges completing the piece as a genuinely woven heritage item.
