The Story Behind the Design
The Gregory name in Ireland is a surname of English and Norman-French origin — from the Greek Gregorios, meaning watchful or alert, made famous by multiple popes and saints — carried by families who settled in the Irish counties during the medieval and plantation periods. Gregory families appear in the records of various Irish counties as part of the Anglo-Irish community, their name associated most famously in the Irish context with Augusta, Lady Gregory, the playwright and cultural patron who was one of the co-founders of the Abbey Theatre and a central figure of the Irish Literary Revival. This Irish woven blanket features the Gregory family crest against the Irish National Tartan.
History & Heritage
Lady Augusta Gregory — born Augusta Persse at Roxborough, County Galway in 1852 — married Sir William Gregory of Coole Park, County Galway and became, through the Abbey Theatre she co-founded with W. B. Yeats and John Millington Synge, one of the most important figures in the history of Irish literature and culture. Her home at Coole Park was for decades the gathering place of the Irish Literary Revival, and the autograph tree in its grounds bears the initials of Yeats, Synge, O’Casey, and many others. The Gregory name carries this remarkable literary and cultural legacy in the west of Ireland.
Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Gregory family crest and the Irish National Tartan created within the textile structure during weaving, not printed onto the surface. The design is part of the cloth itself: consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges completing the piece correctly.
