The Story Behind the Design

The Harvey name in Ireland is carried by families of both English settler and Norman-Irish origin, found across Munster and Leinster in the records of the medieval and early modern periods. Harvey — from the Breton given name Haerviu, meaning battle worthy — was a name brought to Britain by Breton followers of William the Conqueror and carried on to Ireland through subsequent waves of Norman-Irish settlement. Harvey families appear in the records of County Wexford and the surrounding counties, part of the established Norman-Irish and later English settler community of the south-east. This Irish woven blanket features the Harvey family crest against the Irish National Tartan.

History & Heritage

In County Wexford — the first county of Norman settlement in Ireland — the Harvey name has a long presence, associated with the established gentry families of the county through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The county’s Harvey families were part of the Protestant Ascendancy community that shaped Wexford’s civic and political life in the early modern period, while the name also appears in Munster counties among families of similar origin. Beauchamp Bagenal Harvey, the United Irishman who commanded rebel forces in Wexford during the 1798 Rebellion, was among the most dramatic figures to bear this name — a Protestant landlord who led a Catholic peasant army in one of Ireland’s most celebrated and tragic uprisings.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Harvey family crest and the Irish National Tartan created within the textile structure during weaving, not printed onto the surface. The design is part of the cloth itself: consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges completing the piece correctly.
