Look closely at that crest: a spur, with a wing. Tradition says a Johnstone chief once warned Robert the Bruce to flee Edward I's court by sending exactly that — a spur with a bird's wing attached, a coded message to spur his horse and take flight. The Bruce got away, and went on to win Scotland's freedom. A fair bit of history to hold in one hand over morning coffee.
